False Alarm

You finally get to see what Gohn Guay looks like! Cool!

Apologies for missing last week’s update–I think I underestimated how tired I would be after traveling for a few days. I am not Odessa–I’m not a good traveler (though I do get anxious when people try to talk to me). Page 8 is on schedule for completion, so I’m not worried about getting back on track.

I colored a lot of this on the iPad! …It was hard! I don’t think I want to do that again if I can help it. But I learned a lot.

Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you next week!

Hi guys! It’s been really important to me that I try and get pages up on time for this Chapter, but unfortunately this week preparing for a trip and making sure everything else was in order had me a little low on time, and I couldn’t manage to get the page finished before I had to leave this week. I’m heading to Seattle for a sorely needed vacation and while I’m disappointed that I couldn’t get this week’s page to you, I’m excited to go somewhere I haven’t been yet!

I’ll be working a bit on pages while I’m away, which is possible thanks to the iPad Pro and the Clip Studio app, so updates will definitely be up and running again next week, barring some unexpected circumstance (knock on all the wood). Gonna try to keep it to a minimum though (no more than 30 minutes a day is what I promised), since this vacation was specifically meant to try and cut through my usual workaholism.

Thanks for your support thus far, though, and I’ll see you guys soon!

In the meanwhile, have a sketch of Odessa I did from when she was younger for a casual attempt at inktober this year:

I’m really excited to draw a new character! I wonder who it is?

Trying a couple of new things out w/ wordbubble and font size this week! I’ve always been a little uncertain about how things read, but last week I printed out page 5 to see what it looked like and the lettering looked a little too big, and a little too messy. Tell me if you think it’s readable or not! I’d really appreciate it.

I’m also messing a little with how the website looks! I haven’t really touched it since I put it up, but I’ve been meaning to tweak things for a while. You’ll probably see little changes here and there as time goes on. Just a lil at a time.

Thanks for reading!

A little hesitation, perhaps?

Odessa’s apparent stoicism doesn’t do much to hide the fact that she’s mostly a nervous wreck. Which is part of why I like writing her.

Thanks for reading! Please share or comment if you’re enjoying Chapter 2 so far (or if you just like knowing that I’m suffering through these backgrounds haha). I’ll see you next Wednesday!

Over the mountain and up the hill, to Lolo’s house we go…I think?

This page was simultaneously fun and a big pain to do. I’m starting to enjoy doing backgrounds though. Can’t wait to get to them dialogues. I hope at least that you guys are enjoying looking at them as much as I’m enjoying making them!

A Worldbuilding funfact!

Zentanese writing is more or less standardized across the breadth of the continent (though dialects range w/in those countries, of course), but the standard writing system is broken up into 2 styles colloquially known as: Swoop and Slice.

Swoop is used primarily for books and other writing with ink and paint (you can see some examples of it on Odessa’s Map), and is considered by the Southern Queen as the ‘true’ form of the script. Slice was a simplified variation developed by jungle and mountain communities whose primary form of record keeping at one time was carved into wood or pressed into clay. It is called “slice” due to its form meant to be able to be quickly written w/ a slice of a knife.

I’ll see you next week!

There are so many expository paintings in these first 10 pages that I’m simultaneously enjoying and getting angry at myself for haha

Thanks for reading! Share or comment if you’re enjoying it so far!

Galopon is already turning out to be a little weird. She’s making the best of it, though.

Getting back into the swing of making this comic feels really nice, though there are always struggles w/ learning to not chase shiny things. But I’ve been really working on focusing my efforts and my time in healthy ways, which seems to be already having a positive impact. I hope it continues!

If you like this comic so far, please share or comment! I work hard on this and it means a lot to me to see that people are reading. Thank you!

Nice, not-suspicious-at-all tree

Ahh, there you go. The first page. Working on this has felt really good, and I’m actually really happy with how it’s turned out. It’s felt really good getting back to comics after having been away for so long, and it feels really good to enjoy doing it after a while of kind of being in a funk.

Thanks so much to all of you reading. Leave a comment or share the comic if you’re excited for Chapter 2! I’ll see you next Wednesday!
